Senior Fullstack Engineer — Search & Discovery
We help thousands of animals each day to find a new loving home as well as assisting their human caregivers in the process. Our ambition is to provide trust, safety and convenience to the animal world
About us
Pet Media Group (PMG) is a scale-up that acquires, launches, and develops market-leading pet marketplaces globally, with over 1.5 million animals finding new homes through our platforms every year. We currently operate in 6 countries (UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and most recently the US) — all within just 5 years of launching. Here's one of our apps: Pets4Homes.co.uk
The way pets find new loving homes has remained largely unchanged for centuries. We're on a mission to change that through innovative technology — and increasingly, through the intelligent use of AI. We're a young and ambitious team who have built unicorns before (e.g. Avito), backed by some of Europe's leading investors (e.g. Verdane and Otiva — early backers of Klarna, CAIA, Apotea, and Easypark).
Here is the rewritten job ad, updated to emphasize ownership over the roadmap and to clarify that this role dives straight into the core elements of the search experience (ranking, filtering, relevance, etc.).

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a Full-Stack Engineer to step in as the primary owner of the Search & Discovery domain at PMG. In this role, you won't just be executing tasks; you will be the main person driving this area forward—responsible for both defining the strategic roadmap and executing the code that brings it to life.
This role touches the absolute core of our marketplace experience. You will take charge of how millions of users navigate our platforms, directly optimizing search relevance, ranking algorithms, filtering, and auto-complete, while laying the groundwork for the future of AI-driven semantic search.
We're looking for someone who actively uses AI tools as part of their daily workflow: whether that's using LLMs to accelerate development, exploring AI-powered tooling for testing, or staying genuinely curious about how AI can revolutionize user discovery.
We expect roughly 6 years of engineering experience, a background that balances technical execution with product ownership, and a mindset that sees AI as a multiplier, not a buzzword.
Requirements
We're a fast-growing scale-up. We want engineers who build fast, fail fast, and learn fast. You don't need to be a world-class expert in every tool we use — but you do need an entrepreneurial, open mindset, strong JavaScript/TypeScript proficiency, and a genuine enthusiasm for AI-assisted development.
Core (Required):
Domain Ownership: Ability to take a high-level product vision, translate it into a concrete technical roadmap, and execute it independently.
Core Search Experience: Direct experience building and optimizing core search functionalities, specifically around ranking systems, advanced filtering, indexing, and query relevance.
Search Technologies: Hands-on experience working with search engines like Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Algolia to build fast, high-traffic query interfaces.
Full-Stack Delivery: Strong experience building scalable web applications with TypeScript, Next.js, Node.js, and React.
Data & Architecture: Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL), data modeling, and GraphQL usage in large systems.
AI-Driven Workflow: Active use of AI tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) in your day-to-day engineering work.
Bonus (Helpful & Appreciated):
Experience implementing personalization, recommendation engines, or vector/semantic search.
Experience with monitoring, query optimization, and performance tuning for high-traffic search endpoints (e.g., using Grafana).
Experience with responsive design, mobile web UX, and UI frameworks like Tailwind.
Experience evaluating or experimenting with AI coding workflows at a team or company level.
Working proficiency in English is required.
Our Tech Stack
Next.js, React, Node.js & React Native (TypeScript throughout) · Elasticsearch · GraphQL & PostgreSQL · Knex · Redis · GitLab CI/CD · Docker · Serverless with AWS Lambda · AWS · Grafana · Bitrise
What we offer

Full ownership of a mission-critical domain—you define the search & discovery roadmap at PMG.
A diverse team across Sweden, Germany, Austria, UK, Poland, Portugal, Bosnia, Croatia, Ukraine, and Egypt.
A real opportunity to shape our search architecture — and to help define how AI becomes part of how we build.
Competitive compensation and great benefits (remote or in-person).
